Charity Miles Charity Miles lets you get fit and raise money for charity at the same time â€" making every step count. It tracks your movements, acting as a fitness tracker, and donates money to your chosen charity with every mile you walk, jog or cycle. It’s very easy to use and can be used to track any movements, even if you’re just out walking your dog. It’s so far raised over US$2 million for charity. Speaking of walking your dog, Walk for a Dog lets you raise money for your favorite animal organization, such as a shelter or rescue center, while walking your dog. 2. HTC Power To Give (Android only) With HTC Power to Give, you can contribute to cutting-edge scientific research without doing anything. All you need to do is download the app and leave your phone plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data while you sleep. Your phone’s spare processing power will be used as part of a global network of smartphones to power scientific research aimed at answering some of the world’s biggest questions in medical, scientific and environmental projects, from curing cancer to eradicating world hunger. This should definitely help you sleep at night! 3. My Life as a Refugee Every minute an estimated eight people are forced to flee war, persecution or terror. My Life as a Refugee is a game which aims to educate and raise awareness on these issues. Created by The UN Refugee Agency, the game sees players face a series of tough decisions and events to try to survive and rebuild their lives, based on real-life experiences of families torn apart by conflict or persecution. Blind people can use the app to ask for help with anything from simply knowing when their milk expires to finding their way around a new home. 5. Tree Planet What if your favorite mobile game could plant trees? Over the last four years, Tree Planet has turned virtual trees into real ones, planting more than 500,000 new trees across the world. In the latest version, Tree Planet 3, you play to save an endangered baby tree â€" once you successfully rescue it, a real tree will be planted. 6. Acts of Kindness Not only do random acts of kindness help you change the world one act at a time, but research has shown that it improves your own happiness and self-worth. This app, available on iTunes, suggests hundreds of good deeds you can perform, from donating to charity to volunteering for a good cause. The app’s developer, Sinecure Industries, has also pledged to donate 25% of the app’s advertising revenue to Goodwill. 7. Pocket CPR Hopefully you’ll never need to use this app, but, if the situation ever arises, it could potentially save lives. Developed by The British Heart Foundation, this app provides real-time feedback and instructions to empower anyone to learn and practice CPR so they can be ready in an emergency. The Feedie app lets you transform this obsession into a great cause, by literally sharing food with those less fortunate. When you use Feedie to take a photo of your food at a participating restaurant and share it, the restaurant will make a donation to The Lunchbox Fund, a non-profit organization that provides meals to schoolchildren in South Africa. The slight drawback is the sparse number of participating restaurants â€" but hopefully there’s one near you. Another good app for helping hungry children is the United Nations’ ShareTheMeal, which allows you to fight hunger with just a tap of your finger â€" it costs just 50 US cents to feed a child for one day. The app also allows you to see where your donation goes and who you’re helping.   9. Good on You Want to be an ethical shopper? Good on You keeps you informed on how fashion brands treat their workers, the environment and animals, so you can make informed decisions on where you shop. As well as finding out which brands are making a positive impact, the app allows you to discover new, sustainable fashion brands that match your budget and preferences, and contact brands directly with your positive or negative feedback. It’s currently available in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and shows ethical ratings for more than 1,200 brands. 10. DoSomething If you’ve ever felt depressed watching the news and wished there was something you could do about it, this app is for you. DoSomething summarizes current events and provides you with instant, powerful ways to make a difference.
